Importance of Nakshatra Nadikas in Determining
Muhurta
Kaala subdivided or the Time personified starts
from Samvatsara- meaning a year, Ayana-meaning half-year,Ritu –meaning season
or 2 solar months, Maasa-meaning half of a Ritu or one Solar month,
Paksha-meaning fortnight /15 days, Dina (Vaara) meaning week day, MUHURTA –
meaning 2 Ghatikas or 48 minutes of time and Nadika meaning 1 Ghatika or 24
minutes of time. These are stronger in the ascending order, so a Nadika is the
most strongest measurement of Time. Most of the people may not be aware of
Nakshatra Nadika usage or simply Nadikas which I am going to explain here.
Now we know that Abhijit Muhurta is the best
Muhurta and this Muhurta is named after Lord Vishnu and is said to remove all
the evils or Doshas. When the Sun transits in to meridian i.e.., almost at
midday, this Muhurta operates for 2 Ghatikas or 48 minutes of time, when Lord
Vishnu with His Sudarshana Chakra destroys all the Doshas in this Muhurta. But
as per Maharshi Shukracharya, a proper selection of Nakshatra Nadika is a must
otherwise even in this so auspicious Muhurta, some evils may happen.
Now let me give below the Muhurtas occurring in a
day time. There are a total of 30 Muhurtas in 24 Hrs. of time and they are
tabulated below and are of 48 minutes time span starting from Sun Rise:

Rudra indicating one footed goat.It indicates transcendent cosmic
energy.(negative)

19 Pushan – Increase or prosperity
20 Ashvi – Mounted on horses
21 Yama – Lord of death
22 Agni- Fire
23 Vidhatri – Creator
24 Chandra ( Kanda ) – Moon

26 Jiva – Living soul,Brihaspathi
27 Vishnu- Lord-All pervader.
28 Arka ( Yumigadyuti) – Meaning Surya or ray of
Surya.
29 Brahma -The Divine Creator.
30 Maruta –The Wind God.
Note : Rudra, Ahi, Pitru, Puruhuta, Vahni, Nirriti,
Bhaga, Girisha, Ajapada, Yama and Agni are Durmuhurtas and Auspicious functions
should not be performed during these Muhurtas.
Now what I am going to explain is about Nakshatra
Nadika or Bhargava Nadika which is half Muhurta but is considered as most
important from the following Mythology :
Once Lord Devendra’s huge forest resources got into
inextinguishable flame so that the whole forest got destroyed. Now the question
came into picture. The Muhurta for the development of the forests was given by
Deva Guru Brihaspathi and he gave a Muhurta of Abhijit on a Tuesday to start
developing the forest. But within a week, the forests got very high fire and
got destroyed. At this juncture Maharshi Shukracharya/Bhargava enters Lord
Devendra’s Sabha and clarifies his doubts. The most learned Maharshi
Bhrugu/Shukracharya said, there is no doubt that Deva Guru has selected the
best Muhurta of Abhijit which removes all the Doshas but He says there is still
most important Muhurta part is Nadika or 1 Ghatika which is 24 Minutes of time
which decides the event is auspicious or inauspicious. Each Muhurta has 2
Nadikas and each has different meanings on different week days. On Tuesday,
during Abhijit Muhurta, the 1st Nadika of 24 minutes indicates Dahana Nadika
which indicates fire, so Lord Devendra’s forest resources got destroyed through
fire. Then came into existence Nakshatra Nadika or Bhargava Nadika. This is the
most important tool in fixing any Muhurta. Many muhurtas fail because of not
observing this Muhurta Devatas and Nakshatra Nadikas.
From Sun rise to Sun set, there are 30 Nadikas and
from Sunset to Sun rise, there are 30 Nadikas, so total there are 60 Nadikas.
Out of these 30 Nadikas, 27 Nadikas are the names of Nakshatras starting from
Vishaka to Swati and then we have Jyotsna, Sandhya and Maitri Nadikas. For each
day, from Sun rise to Sun set, 30 Nadikas give certain results and the same
results prevail from Sun set to Sun rise. But these results differ from each
day.
